First Reconciliation and First Eucharist

Corpus Christi Parish sacramental preparation is a two-year process.  Year I provides children with the foundational knowledge needed in order for them to better comprehend the sacraments, which are explored in more detail in Year II.

Sacramental Preparation includes five important components:

  • Regular participation in Sunday celebration of the Eucharist
  • Family involvement
  • Catechetical instruction
  • The support and recognition of the community
  • The Holy Spirit

1.  Regular participation in the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist.    At every Eucharistic celebration we come together as one worshipping community, united by and in Christ.  This visible expression of the faith of the Church, the Body of Christ, is the central encounter with Christ through which we acquire grace and nourishment to live out our baptismal call to be followers of Christ.  Children must experience the Mass throughout the Liturgical Year in order to be adequately prepared to receive the Eucharist.   Children need to experience the living reality of the Mass in order to make what they are learning real and alive to them personally.

2.  Family involvement. As parents, you have the primary role and responsibility in the development of your children’s faith formation.  This is a commitment to which you agreed when you brought them to the baptismal font.    To assist you in this process, we will provide you with two keepsake books to work on at home with your children.  The books are “We Believe & Celebrate First Penance” and “We Believe & Celebrate First Eucharist.”  Parent guides for these two beautiful books will also be provided so that you and your children get the most out of your faith sharing time. Instruction on the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist is offered for parents every year and is required for parents of children in Sacramental Preparation.  These enriching sessions will provide you with the knowledge you need in order to instruct your children.

3.  Catechetical instruction.  Our catechetical program is designed to support you in raising your children in the Catholic faith.

Year I themes include:

  • Jesus Teaches Us About God’s Love
  • We Are Followers of Jesus
  • We Belong to the Church
  • We Celebrate and Live Our Faith

Year II focuses on the sacramental life of the Church. Themes include:

  • Jesus Christ Is With Us Always
  • Jesus Calls Us to Penance and Reconciliation
  • Jesus Gives Us Himself in the Eucharist
  • We Live Our Catholic Faith

4.  The support and recognition of the community.  Eucharist is one of three Sacraments of Initiation, the others being Baptism and Confirmation.  These sacraments initiate us into a community of faith-filled, worshipping Catholics who make up the Body of Christ.  The children’s preparation for celebration of the sacraments, although personal, is not private.  It is intimately connected to the liturgical life of the community that supports them with their prayers, presence, and witness.

5.  The Holy Spirit.   The Holy Spirit, who we receive at baptism, is present and active in the lives and hearts of children.  We must never underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit to enlighten children of any age to spiritual truths.  According to their ability to understand, the Holy Spirit will provide them with insights into the mysteries about which they are learning.  Pray to the Holy Spirit to provide you and your children with wisdom and grace during this important time of deepening relationship to Christ and the Church.
