Youth Ministry and Confirmation Overview
Our Youth Ministry Program is the umbrella under which Confirmation Preparation occurs. Youth participation in our Youth Ministry Program is an integral aspect of preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation, as it broadens our teens’ experience of church, knowledge of the faith, and understanding of a lived Christian faith.
The Goals for Ministry with Adolescents, as outlined by the Diocese of Manchester in the document “Nourishing Disciples,” are the framework around which our program is built and the pathway that leads youth through the Sacrament of Confirmation into a life of Christian discipleship. The goals are:
- To empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today.
- To draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the Catholic faith community.
- To foster the personal and spiritual growth of each young person.
In Grade 9, youth register for our Youth Ministry/Confirmation program. The two-year program is designed to be flexible, with many choices, because we know the busy schedules our teens keep. In Grade 10, youth once again register for the program. In addition to participation in our comprehensive youth ministry program or theology classes and Campus Ministry in a Catholic High School (such as St. Thomas), candidates for Confirmation participate in Immediate Preparation for Confirmation, consisting of an eight-week period of catechetical sessions. This preparation includes understanding the rites, symbols, connection of Confirmation to Baptism, gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit, and living as disciples of Christ. Parents and sponsors should be actively involved in the catechetical preparation and will be provided resources to help them understand and fulfill their role.
Adult confirmation preparation takes place once a year in the spring or fall. We will not be offering Adult Confirmation in the Spring of 2015. Look for it in the fall. This is for adults who were baptized, received First Eucharist, and practice their faith, but have not yet received the sacrament of Confirmation. Sessions meet for two hours once a week for four weeks. Upon completion of the four weeks, those who attended will be confirmed at the Adult Confirmation Mass at St. Joseph Cathedral in Manchester. Information regarding when the sessions will take place will be published in the bulletin. For more information, contact the Faith Formation Director, Brenda Stinson, at 436-4555.
