The Portsmouth Catholic SHARE Fund is an emergency financial program for those, regardless of denomination, who have exhausted all other avenues of support and don’t qualify for traditional outreach programs in our community. The SHARE Fund works with local programs such as Welfare, Rockingham Community Action Program, Families First, local food pantries and other community services. Such relationships are key to discovering and verifying where there is true need and filling some gaps that exist in our many fine community programs. SHARE provides assistance toward back rent and utilities, vouchers for food and gas or basic car repairs where no public transportation is available. Payments are made directly to service providers.
All donations are distributed directly for basic living needs on an emergency basis. The SHARE Fund is operated solely by volunteers who donate several hours a week to working in the office and meeting those who have financial needs. Operating expenses for this program are paid directly by our benefactors. Some have donated printing and graphic design services, while others have given office equipment and supplies. Caseworkers meet with the family during the initial crisis and investigate programs for which the family might qualify. If SHARE can assist with their needs, a review process is initiated and assistance is rendered.

There are several ways to send in a donation to SHARE.
- Write a check to “Portsmouth Catholic SHARE Fund” and send it directly to: SHARE Fund, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH03801.
- Put a check in an envelope and drop it into the Sunday collection.
- Put a check in an envelope marked “SHARE” and drop it into the Poor Box at the weekend Masses.
- Put a cash donation into the Poor Box. All donations from the Poor Box go directly to the SHARE Fund.
Would you like to volunteer as a case worker in the SHARE program? As a caseworker, you would interview applicants for assistance, who are referred to us to determine need and availability of funds.
Commitment: The SHARE office is located in the basement of the Immaculate Conception rectory. It is open Tuesdays (9am – 12noon) and Friday (10am – 1pm). Case-workers schedule themselves to be in the office two to three times per month, four hours each time.
Training: Interview procedures would be provided on the job by the SHARE staff.

A few short years ago, Bill and his family were on the road to success. Bill had been given a promotion and Marcia’s career was taking off; their children were good students and the family was involved in community life. The future looked bright. Then Marcia, diagnosed with breast cancer, underwent extensive treatment and Bill’s position was eliminated due to corporate downsizing.
Along with the loss of this job, the family lost their company-provided medical insurance. Overnight, this couple suffered illness and overwhelming financial loss. As housing, utilities, food and transportation bills mounted, they applied for community resources and received partial assistance.
They needed to move and could not find enough money to fund a security deposit. Back utilities weren’t fully covered, and no one covered the car repair necessary so Bill could get to job interviews. Fortunately, an agency referred them to SHARE.
